| 1) | Helen was eight years old, |
| 2) | and one day one of her teeth began hurting. |
| 3) | She cried in her class at school, |
| 4) | and her teacher said kindly, |
| 5) | "Why are you crying, Helen?" |
| 6) | "Because one of my teeth hurts," answered Helen. |
| 7) | "Speak to your mother about it," said the teacher, |
| 8) | "and then go and see the dentist." |
| 9) | That afternoon Helen spoke to her mother about her tooth, |
| 10) | and her mother took her to the dentist a few days later. |
| 11) | The dentist looked at the tooth and then he said to Helen, |
| 12) | "It's very bad. |
| 13) | I'm going to take it out, |
| 14) | and then you're going to get a nice, new tooth next year." |
| 15) | He pulled the tooth out. |
| 16) | The next day Helen's teacher asked her about the tooth. |
| 17) | She said to her, |
| 18) | "Does it still hurt, Helen?" |
| 19) | "I don't know," Helen answered. |
| 20) | "Why don't you know?" the teacher said. |
| 21) | "Because the dentist's got it," Helen answered. |
